It really sticks in my throat -- all the so-called experts on the Internet that post about what they know about what is required in a MMA workout.
The most important thing in determining what kind mixed martial arts workout you should do--- is your goals.
What do you want more stamina and endurance? Greater strength? More flexibility?
A good MMA workout will incorporate all these different things. I know what you're probably wondering right now -- "where am I going to get the time to do all of these things?"
Well I ran across the same problem too. So don't worry I have a solution for you.
My grappling technique was never a problem for me -- either in wrestling or in Brazilian jujitsu. But as I found out later on -- when two opponents are matched at the same skill level... the stronger and better conditioned athlete always wins, period end of story!
As a good grappler or mixed martial arts fighter you must have stamina, flexibility, strength, and technique. Today's mixed martial arts fighter is not like the old style karate player. Today, you need to be in good condition in order to survive and thrive in the mixed martial arts world. Nowhere else has this been better seen than in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)
High-Intensity Interval Training
Let's take a look at endurance and strength as part of the MMA workout. First off recent research has proven that high-intensity interval training is much more effective than long workouts. If we were to take a page from Bruce Lee's training program, we will understand that he used circuit training as well as high-intensity interval training.
HIIT is more effective for mixed martial arts training. It coincides with the way an MMA bout occurs.
So instead of running for long distances you're better off doing sprints. Instead of doing a traditional bodybuilding workout you're better off using super sets and circuit training. Keeping the time between exercises to about one minute -- during your strength training sessions.
This will get your body conditioned to the way things are in a grappling or MMA fight.
