MMA Workout For Core Strength: Protect and Serve

Core strength core endurance, these are terms that have been bandied about so regularly that somehow they seem to have lost some of their meaning.

After all when you hear or see something often enough you can somehow l grow to ignore it. For example if you entered a room with a bad smell, the smell appears to dissipate after a few minutes. (In reality it is still there you just become less aware of it).

Anyway, that's enough about bad smells, back to the topic in hand which is core strength. This an area that is of great importance to a fighter. This article includes a brief MMA workout designed to bolster your core.

Nowadays everyone seems to want a six pack (I won't include any beer jokes I promise). Something people are proud owners of eight packs and I am sure every other infomercial or home shopping channel product is just another type of abdominator that is designed mould your stomach into a work of art.

Certain fighters such as Thiago Alves and GSP seem to have well developed abs but what people fail to realise is there is much more than quite literally, meets the eye.. These Fighters have a rock solid gut that is ready to deal with a lot of abuse.

A lot of people think that the way to develop washboard abs is to do a thousand sit ups and maybe about a couple hundred or so crunches. Not True!! Sit ups and crunches will make the muscles on the top strong but what about what lies beneath? The internal framework " the foundation" so to speak. The core. The core includes the surface abs the internal abs called the transverse abdominal plus the internal and external obliques, glutes hips and lower back muscles.

I want to you imagine that the core muscles are like the foundation of a building, the building being the rest of your body. If the foundations are deep rooted and sturdy then the sturdier the building will be. However; if the foundations are shallow then the building will not be strong. The same is the case with your core; if your core is strong then by logic you are strong. Having a strong core will enable you to produce more power. The better your core strength the harder you will be able to hit. It is a simple as that!! Now tell me which serious fighter does not want more striking power.

The basic rule when it comes to building your combat core is that you have to think of the 3 different ranges of motion these are:

Forward

Rotational

Lateral

Keeping this rule in mind will create the building blocks of training regimes of many fighters in the UFC.

In short if you to ensure you have more power in your strikes then work on your core.

To protect and to serve

Having a supremely trained core will mean that as well as being able to dish out the punishment through a more powerful striking ability. It will enable you to withstand a lot more punishment from strikes in the mid section.

The mid section of your body is home to a bunch of soft organs that need protecting so having a strong core will insure that you are able to protect yourself as well as serve out the punishment with powerful strikes. Quite a combination huh!!!

Anyway as promised here is a quick core MMA workout that you can easily fit into your regime.

These exercises can be done with a medicine ball or resistance band

Remember to do three sets of 20 each.

Wood chops
Diagonal chops
Russian twists
Big circles
Figure eights
