What the Perfect Boxing Stance Should Have - Your Fighting Stance Could Save Your Life!

So you want to develop the proper boxing stance? Having the proper boxing stance can do wonders for your abilities in the sport of boxing as well as in any potential self defense situations. I've been around the sport of boxing for over 10 years so I know what the right stance should have.

The most important part of your stance is your foundation. Without your foundation one weak punch and you could suffer a knockdown. So that is where we will start to develop you as a fundamentally sound boxer.

Many amateur boxers fail to realize that their speed, punch power and defensive abilities stem from their legs and footwork. A sound boxers stance will put their weight on the balls of their feel with their knees slightly bent at the proper width apart so that they are not only in position to punch but to also react to any punches that may come at them.

Working your way up, your hips should not be squared to your opponent. You'll want your hips slightly turned so that you are not exposing too much area to be punched. If you could fight sideways effectively, you would be a much harder target to be hit.

Finally, the most important tools for any boxer, their hands. While each experienced fighter will have their own style which they feel comfortable with, the basics will provide proper self defense. Just look at Floyd Mayweather Jr., while many have tried his unique shoulder roll defense, no one has been as successful with it as him.

So, a fighters hands will be in the proper position to block, catch and parry punches while at the same time being able to throw quick and powerful punches.
